My first Altras were the original Escalantes — I think I ended up going through three pairs of them, training for and running multiple marathons and shorter races. The only minor beef I had with them was the upper, and only under certain conditions — the sock-like upper was gloriously soft and form-fitting, but I had to be careful cornering or on rougher terrain because I just didn't trust them to keep my foot stable. But I loved, loved, loved those shoes. Skipped the Escalante 2s (trying out various other Altra models in the meantime), and came back to these, which are a nice upgrade all around. Still bring back memories of that Escalante foot-feel, but with a sturdier, more secure upper. Still a winner, in my book.
